Why would I need a Gigampz if I already have a ATX power supply?
A typical consumer grade 750+ Watt power supply costs around $100. On the other hand a Gigampz board paired with a refurbished industrial grade server power supply can cost as little as $60. The Gigampz also provides some nice additional features like the ability to monitor and control it with a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or similar device. The bottom line is you get a better power supply for around 50% of the cost. The savings can be even greater for large deployments.
Can I use a Gigampz without the Raspberry Pi?
Yes, every board comes with a jumper you can use to manually turn the power on and off w/o using a Raspberry Pi. To turn the power on simply place the provided jumper over pins 2 & 3 marked by the thick white line on the JP1 header. Remove the jumper or place it on pins 1 & 2 to turn the power off.
Does the DPS-800GBA need extra cooling fans to stay cool?
The DPS-800GBA has fans with built in speed control no additional fans are necessary. Setting the supply directly on a flat surface can cause it to feel hot to the touch. Using rubber feet or size M3 screws to raise it up off the surface slightly or turning the supplies on their side so that both the top and bottom are exposed to the air will greatly improve the supplies operating temperature.
